ENVIRONMENTAL ECONOMICS: An Under-Appreciated Approach to Improving Prosperity
It’s said that you can’t manage what you don’t measure. For much of human history, the services provided by our natural capital were taken for granted. Only recently, when some of these natural systems have lost the ability to provide these services have we taken notice. There are now numerous examples of communities that have invested in natural capital to secure or enhance the services produced. A few communities have begun to recognize natural capital as an integral part of the asset management task that communities face.
In this workshop, we will discuss natural capital as a concept, relating it to the way that capital assets are typically understood. We will also present a number of examples where the value of the services provided by natural capital is considered when deciding how to invest in providing community services.
