ECOLOGICAL IMPERATIVES BREAKOUT: Safeguarding Coastal Shorelines With Proactive Legal Solutions
B.C. has hundreds of coastal communities. Climate change and rising sea levels pose challenges for these communities, with increasing flood risks and coastal erosion, but also offer opportunities to strengthen connections to coastal ecosystems and improve resilience. From a local government perspective, jurisdiction below the high water mark is limited, but through collaboration (working with other levels of government – First Nations, federal, and provincial – as well as community members) and greater sensitivity to the needs and benefits of coastal habitat and species, new practices are emerging.
