FOOD SYSTEMS/SECURITY FORUM 1: Understanding Agricultural Land Use and Our Food System Future

November 22, 2017
10:30 am  -  10:45 am

Climate change, food insecurity, resource depletion, population growth, and economic marginalization call into question the resilience of our food system. The Institute for Sustainable Food Systems, has developed an unprecedented computational tool to model the economic, environmental stewardship, and food self-reliance potentials of regional food systems. This facilitates “what if analysis” for planning and economic development decision making.

We modelled numerous southwest BC bioregion future food system scenarios comparing fourteen indicators including:

  1. Food production and food self-reliance
  2. Economic output, GDP, income, jobs, and tax revenue
  3. Environmental stewardship: wildlife habitat quality and connectivity, carbon stocks, nitrogen balance, greenhouse gas emissions, and food ecological footprint

Project outcomes and findings will be presented and discussed.
